Experiencing the Northern Lights

Experiencing the Northern Lights at Cline Spit Community Beach County Park in Sequim, WA, was nothing short of surreal. Cline Spit itself is a serene location, tucked along Dungeness Bay, where visitors typically come to enjoy its 240 feet of public tidelands, peaceful beach access, and stunning views of the Olympic Mountains. But that night, under the stillness and quiet skies, everything felt different. The air was completely still, and even the ocean seemed to hold its breath along with the fifty or so of us there, captivated by nature’s rare and magnificent display.

Witnessing the lights was like watching a story unfold in the sky—a vibrant yet delicate dance of greens, purples, and occasional blues that felt as though they were alive and stretching across the heavens just for us. Having only seen the Northern Lights in photos before, the real experience was transformative. The colors were so vivid and fluid…

The experience was more than visual—it was visceral. As the colors wove through the darkness, I could feel their energy reach into something deep within me. The sensation was as though the lights weren’t just above me but had somehow come alive, casting a spell that anchored my feet to the earth while lifting a piece of me skyward. Having seen only photos before, nothing could have prepared me for the sheer magnitude of this otherworldly show. It was like nature's own symphony, a wordless story told in shifting light, expanding my sense of wonder with every shifting hue.

The park, with its small 2-acre stretch, is often used for peaceful activities like kayaking and fishing. It’s known for the views across to the New Dungeness Lighthouse. This evening, though, the usual activities faded into the background as nature offered an unforgettable, intimate spectacle of beauty and mystery.
