Exploring Atlanta: Puppets, Graffiti, and Unexpected Adventures

Our recent trip to Atlanta was packed with art, history, and a touch of nostalgia. Donna and I, along with my sister and brother-in-law, spent a wonderful day exploring the city. From the world of puppetry to the vibrant graffiti of Krog Street Tunnel, Atlanta showed us its creative soul—and we loved every minute of it!

A Magical Stop at the Center for Puppetry Arts

As lifelong fans of Jim Henson, we were thrilled to visit the Center for Puppetry Arts. The museum is an absolute treasure trove, housing puppets from across the globe and showcasing the artistry behind this timeless craft. For us, the highlight was seeing the Dark Crystal and Labyrinth puppets up close. There’s something surreal about standing face-to-face with characters that sparked our imaginations as kids.

Fun fact: Did you know the Center for Puppetry Arts holds the largest collection of Jim Henson’s creations outside of his family’s archives? It’s a must-visit for fans of his work and anyone curious about the history of puppetry.

What’s your favorite Jim Henson creation? We’d love to know! Drop your favorite puppet or muppet in the comments.

Street Art in Action: Krog Street Tunnel

Next, we wandered to the Krog Street Tunnel, one of Atlanta’s most iconic street art spots. The tunnel is like a living gallery, with layers of graffiti and murals constantly evolving. Each piece tells a story, whether it’s a bold political statement, a celebration of color, or just a quirky doodle that catches your eye.

Walking through as the city buzzed around us was an unforgettable experience. There’s a raw energy here that you can’t find in curated galleries.

An Early Peek at the Atlanta Underground

From there, we ventured to the famous Atlanta Underground. This historic area is a mix of old-world charm and modern entertainment. However, we learned an important lesson: don’t show up too early if you’re expecting a lively scene. (Apparently, being “early birds” means we’re definitely old birds—LOL!)

Still, it was fascinating to see the space and imagine how bustling it must get when the nightlife kicks off. Next time, we’ll plan our visit better—or maybe not, since we’re more likely to be asleep by then!

The Day in Photos and Food

No Wandertogs adventure would be complete without capturing some memories. From the puppets to the graffiti, Atlanta gave us so much to photograph. Unfortunately, we didn’t plan a food stop this time, but Atlanta is famous for its culinary scene, and we’re taking notes for next time. (If you’ve got a favorite restaurant or café in Atlanta, tell us—we’re already building our foodie list!)

Why We Love Atlanta

Atlanta is a city that celebrates creativity in all its forms, from the nostalgia of Jim Henson’s masterpieces to the bold, contemporary art of Krog Street. It’s a place where history meets innovation, and we’re already looking forward to returning.
